LINI-south-buru-program

Description: From June 2023 to December 2024, Yayasan Alam Indonesia Lestari (LINI), with support from the Resource Legacy Fund’s (RLF) Sustainable Fisheries
Fund (SFF), conducted a fisheries project to lay the foundation for a future Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) for the Yellowfin Tuna Handline fishery. The project is based in South Buru Island, Maluku Province, Indonesia, located within the Western Central Pacific Ocean (FAO Major Fishing Area 71).

The initiative focused on empowering handline tuna fishers in Pasir Putih, South Buru, by strengthening their capacity in key areas such as fisheries data recording, best practices for post-harvest tuna handling, safety at sea, organizational development, and human rights and social responsibility. The project also supported fishers in obtaining essential legal and administrative documentation, including KUSUKA (Fisher Identification Card), Pass Kecil (small vessel registration), and E-BKP (electronic proof of fish catch).

Key milestones from our 2023–2024 field activities can be accessed through the link below. These include empowering fishing communities through boat registration, conducting social audits, improving catch data collection, facilitating access to official fisher documentation, and implementing other key initiatives to support sustainable and equitable fisheries management.
