LINI Aquaculture and Training Centre (LATC)
Compared to freshwater ornamental fish, there are very few types of marine aquarium fish that have so far been cultivated successfully on a commercial scale in Indonesia.
In December 2014, LINI with support from the Sianawati family (the owner of CV Blue Star Aquatic), started developing the LINI Aquaculture and Training Centre (LATC) in Les Village, North Bali, where LINI has been working with coastal aquarium fishers since 2008.
The LATC is managed in part by many of the local residents in Les Village through partnerships with educational institutions, Government and private sector interest groups to help to achieve long-term economic security for the community.
The development of the Centre responds directly to the need to reduce the destruction of Indonesia’s globally important coral reefs, and to create incentives for reef management and conservation that benefit coastal communities who depend on coral reef resources.
The Centre offers training and opportunities for work experience in various aspects of marine conservation, reef restoration, aquaculture, and sustainable fishery management. The Centre aims to target industry, fishers, Government staff and university students to learn about aquaculture, and focuses on teaching practical skills and knowledge about the breeding and husbandry of reef fish.
